From Sanskrit चलति (calati), चरति (carati, to go away), from Proto-Indo-European *kʷel- (to move; to turn (around)). Cognate with Sylheti ꠌꠟꠣ (sola), Bengali চলা (cola), Odia ଚାଲିବା (cālibā), Hindustani چلنا / चलना (calnā), Nepali चल्नु (calnu), Punjabi ਚੱਲਣਾ (callaṇā), Gujarati ચરવું (carvũ) ~ ચાલવું (cālvũ), Marathi चालणे (ċālṇe). Doublet of চৰা (sora).
