Inherited from Sanskrit ক্ষীৰ (kṣīrá), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *kṣiHrám, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kšiHrám, possibly from the BMAC substrate. Cognate with Bengali খীর (khir, inspissated milk), Sinhalese කිරි (kiri), Odia ଖିରା (khirā, inspissated milk), Hindi खीर (khīr, kheer), Urdu کھیر (khīr, kheer), Sinhalese කිරි (kiri, milk), Avestan 𐬑𐬱𐬎𐬎𐬌𐬛- (xšuuid-), Northern Kurdish şîr, Persian شیر (šir), Zazaki şıd, şıt.
