Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰHnás, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰh₁-nós (“abandoned”), from *ǵʰeh₁- (“to go, walk”). Cognate with Ancient Greek χῆρος (khêros, “empty, bereft”), Latin hērēs. Related to जहाति (jahāti).
