Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́áźʰaHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰáȷ́ʰaHti, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰé-ǵʰeh₁-ti (“to abandon, leave”), from *ǵʰeh₁- (“to go, walk”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬰𐬁𐬌𐬙𐬌 (zazāiti), Latin hērēs, Ancient Greek χήρα (khḗra, “widow”), Old English gān (“to go”) (whence English go).
