Etymology
[edit]From हस्त (hásta, “hand”) + -इन् (-in), literally “having a hand (i.e., a trunk)”.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]हस्तिन् • (hastín) stem, m
- an elephant
- c. 1700 BCE – 1200 BCE, Ṛgveda 1.64.7:
- म॒हि॒षासो॑ मा॒यिन॑श्चि॒त्रभा॑नवो गि॒रयो॒ न स्वत॑वसो रघु॒ष्यदः॑।
मृ॒गा इ॑व ह॒स्तिनः॑ खादथा॒ वना॒ यदारु॑णीषु॒ तवि॑षी॒रयु॑ग्ध्वं॥- mahiṣā́so māyínaścitrábhānavo giráyo ná svátavaso raghuṣyádaḥ.
mṛgā́ iva hastínaḥ khādathā vánā yádā́ruṇīṣu táviṣīráyugdhvaṃ. - Mighty, with wondrous power and marvellously bright, selfstrong like mountains, you glide swiftly on your way.
Like the wild elephants you eat the forests up when you assume your strength among the bright red flames.
- mahiṣā́so māyínaścitrábhānavo giráyo ná svátavaso raghuṣyádaḥ.
- म॒हि॒षासो॑ मा॒यिन॑श्चि॒त्रभा॑नवो गि॒रयो॒ न स्वत॑वसो रघु॒ष्यदः॑।
Usage notes
[edit]In Vedic Sanskrit, the term appears in the neighbourhood of the term मृग (mṛgá, “beast”), implying that it originally functioned purely as an adjective.
