[edit]Inherited from Old Gujarati हाथीउ (hāthīu), from Prakrit 𑀳𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀺 (hatthi), 𑀳𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀻 (hatthī) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀳𑀲𑁆𑀢𑀺 (hasti), from Sanskrit हस्तिन् (hastin).[1] Cognate with Hindi and Marwari हाथी (hāthī).
