Doublet of शाल (śāl) through Persian. Cognate with Assamese শাৰী (xari), Bengali শাড়ি (śaṛi), Gujarati સાડી (sāḍī), Hindustani ساڑی / साड़ी (sāṛī), Konkani साडी (sāḍī), Sindhi ساڙهيِ / साढ़ी (sāṛhī), and Sylheti ꠢꠣꠠꠤ (haṛi).
