Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀲𑀸𑀟𑀻 (sāḍī), 𑀲𑀸𑀟𑀺𑀆 (sāḍiā) (with Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-)), from Sanskrit शाटी (śāṭī), शाटिका (śāṭikā), feminine of शाट (śāṭa, strip of cloth). Doublet of शाल (śāl) through Persian. Cognate with Assamese শাৰী (xari), Bengali শাড়ি (śaṛi), Gujarati સાડી (sāḍī), Hindustani ساڑی / साड़ी (sāṛī), Konkani साडी (sāḍī), Sindhi ساڙهيِ / साढ़ी (sāṛhī), and Sylheti ꠢꠣꠠꠤ (haṛi).
