Etymology

[edit]

The origin is uncertain. Often thought to be borrowed from Dravidian. However, Burrow prefers to connect this to Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (to hide), via an intermediate form *शाल्त् (śālt). Compare Persian شال (šâl).
