Etymology

Inherited from Old Hindi समझना (samajhanā), समुझना (samujhanā), from Prakrit संबुज्झइ (saṃbujjhaï), संबुज्झदि (saṃbujjhadi), from Sanskrit सम्बुध्यते (sambudhyate). Cognate with Punjabi ਸਮਝਣਾ (samjhaṇā) / سَمجھݨا (samjhṇā), Gujarati સમજવું (samajvũ), Marathi समजणे (samajṇe). Compare now-archaic बूझना (būjhnā), derived from the same verb without a suffix.
