From Proto-Indo-Iranian *matíš, from Proto-Indo-European *mén-ti-s ~ *mn̥-téy-s (thought). Cognate with Latin mēns, Ancient Greek μᾰ́ντῐς (mắntĭs), Proto-Germanic *mundiz (whence English mind). By surface analysis, मन् (man) +‎ -ति (-ti).
