Etymology

Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘻𑘝𑘹𑘨𑘹𑘽 (potereṃ), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑁄𑀢𑁆𑀢 (potta, “cloth”), from a derivative of Sanskrit पोत (pota, “cloth”) (compare Sanskrit पोत्र (potra), प्रोत (prota), Arabic فُوطَة (fūṭa)). Related to पोते (pote). Compare Gujarati પોતું (potũ), પોતડી (potḍī), Hindi पोता (potā, “a cloth, brush or stick”), पोतिया (potiyā), पोतड़ा (potṛā), Sindhi پوتيِ / पोती, پوتيِو / पोत्यो, Punjabi ਪੋਤੜਾ (potṛā) / پوتڑا (potṛā), Nepali पोतो (poto), Odia ପୋତା (potā).
