Inherited from Prakrit *𑀧𑁄𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀅 (*pŏttaa), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀧𑁄𑀢𑀓 (potaka /⁠pottaka⁠/), from Sanskrit पौत्र (paútra) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-). Doublet of पौत्र (pautra).
