Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *niẓḍás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *niždás, from Proto-Indo-European *nisdós (“nest”). The constituent parts are नि (ni, “down”) and √सद् (sad), a root related with lying, sitting or sinking. Cognates include Latin nīdus, Old Armenian նիստ (nist), Old Church Slavonic гнѣздо (gnězdo), English nest.
