[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ní, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ní, from Proto-Indo-European *(h₁)ni (thus ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁én). Cognate with Avestan 𐬥𐬌 (ni), German nieder, English nether, beneath.
