Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *neyH-. Compare Avestan 𐬌𐬙𐬈𐬫𐬀𐬥 (iteyan, to bring, lead), Old Persian 𐎠𐎴𐎹 (a-n-y /⁠anaya⁠/, he was leading, bringing), Middle Persian [script needed] (nītan, to lead, drive), Hittite 𒈾𒄿𒉈 (nāine, to guide).
