    From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dʰuHmás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰuHmás (smoke), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰuh₂mós (smoke). Cognate with Ancient Greek θυμός (thumós), Latin fūmus, Old Church Slavonic дꙑмъ (dymŭ).
