Inherited from Prakrit 𑀥𑀽𑀫 (dhūma), from Sanskrit धूम (dhūma), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰuHmás, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰuh₂mós, from *dʰewh₂- + *-mós. Cognate with Ancient Greek θυμός (thumós), Latin fūmus, Old Church Slavonic дꙑмъ (dymŭ). Compare Urdu دُھواں (dhuā̃) / Hindi धुआँ (dhuā̃).
