Etymology

Inherited from Sanskrit *त्रपति (trapati) ~ *तर्पति (tarpati), from the root त्रप् (trap, to feel; to leap). Cognate with Punjabi ਟੱਪਣਾ (ṭappaṇā) / ٹَپَّݨا (ṭappaṇā), Sindhi ٽرَپَڻُ (ṭrapaṇu) / ट्रपणु (ṭrapaṇu), Saraiki ترَپَّݨ (trappaṇ), Nepali टप्नु (ṭapnu), Gujarati ટપવું (ṭapvũ), Marathi टाप (ṭāp, fretting), Odia ଟପିବା (ṭapibā, to leap over, surpass), Bengali টপকানো (ṭopkanō, to leap over).
