Derived from Sanskrit जेमति (jemati), जमति (jamati), possibly from Proto-Munda *ɟv₁₀m (to eat). Cognate to Gujarati જમવું (jamvũ), Konkani जेव्चे (jevce), Marathi जेवणे (jevṇe).
