Sanskrit
[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]Pronoun
[edit]किंचिद् • (kiṃcid)
- anything (see किम् (kim) for more) (This entry is a descendant hub.)
Usage notes
[edit]This is an orthographic univerbation of the pronoun किम् (kim) and indeclinable particle चिद् (cid). Only the pronominal part declines (for example, with masculine singular कश्चिद् (kaścid) and masculine plural केचिद् (kecid)).
Descendants
[edit]Descendants show either partial collision with कोऽपि (koʼpi) (from किम् (kim) + अपि (api)) or reanalysis by compounding the descendant forms of किम् (kim) with the descendant forms of चिद् (cid). For example, this is why the Pali masculine singular is koci (from ko + ci) rather than *kacchi.
- Pali: kiñci (n. sg.), kaci (lemma), koci (m. sg.), keci (m. pl.)
- Ashokan Prakrit: 𑀓𑀺𑀁𑀘𑀺 (kiṃci, n. sg. nom.)
- Prakrit: 𑀓𑀺𑀁𑀘𑀺 (kiṃci, n. sg. nom.) (see there for further descendants)
- Dardic:
- Ushojo: کوئی (kōai)
- Ashokan Prakrit: 𑀓𑁄𑀘𑀺 (koci), 𑀓𑁂𑀘𑀺 (keci) (attested at Shāhbāzgaṛhī, Girnār, Mānsehrā), with traces of the original -śc- in 𑀓𑁂𑀙 (keccha) (attested at Kālsī)
