Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čid, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷid. Cognate with Latin quid (“why?”).

- (Vedic) at all, even, indeed, also, often merely laying stress on a preceding word
- (Classical Sanskrit) only used after interrogative pronouns and adverbs to render them indefinite, and after जातु (jātu)
