Prakrit
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit ππΊπππΊ (kiαΉci), from Sanskrit ΰ€ΰ€Ώΰ€ΰ€ΰ€Ώΰ€¦ΰ₯ (kiαΉcid). Outside of Romani and Sinhalese, descendants indicate a late (Proto-New Indo-Aryan) pronounciation as *ππΊππΌ (*kichu) or *πππΌ (*kachu). Most likely, this is a univerbation of ππΊπππΊ (kiαΉci), an emphatic in π³πΊ (hi), and the masculine nominative singular marker -π (-u), with spurious simplifications due to this word's commonality. On the usage of the emphatic marker in indefinite pronouns, compare Hindi ΰ€ΰ€ΰ₯ (kabhΔ«, βsometimesβ) from ΰ€ΰ€¬ (kab, βwhenβ).
See πππ (koi) for more.
