Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀝𑁆𑀞𑀕 (aṭṭhaga), without compensatory lengthening, from Sanskrit अष्टक (áṣṭaka), whence also Punjabi ਅੱਠਾ (aṭṭhā). Doublet of अष्टक (aṣṭak). Equivalent to आठ (āṭh) +‎ -आ (). Cognate with Nepali अट्ठा (aṭṭhā).
