Etymology
[edit]Uncertain:
- Possibly from ܠ- (l-, “to, at”) + ܓܸܣ (gis, “side of”), with a shift from /ɡ/ to /k/, but this does not explain the presence of the second /l/ that exists in posessive forms.
- Possibly from an unattested *ܟܸܣܠܵܐ (*kislā, “loins”), cognate to or borrowed from Akkadian kislum (“loins”) or perhaps strengthened by it. This explains the second /l/ that exists in its possessive forms.[1]
