ܠܟܣ

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Assyrian Neo-Aramaic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain:

  • Possibly from ܠ- (l-, to, at) +‎ ܓܸܣ (gis, side of), with a shift from /ɡ/ to /k/, but this does not explain the presence of the second /l/ that exists in possessive forms.
  • Possibly from an unattested *ܟܸܣܠܵܐ (*kislā, loins), cognate to or borrowed from Akkadian kislum (loins) or perhaps strengthened by it. This explains the second /l/ that exists in its possessive forms.[1]
