Etymology

Inherited from Old Punjabi ਚਿਟਾ (ciṭā /⁠ciṭṭā⁠/), a Middle Indo-Aryan borrowing from Proto-Nuristani *crittá, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćwitrás, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwit-ró-s (whence Sanskrit श्वित्र (śvitrá)).
