From Middle Persian [script needed] (cygwn' /⁠čiyōn⁠/, as, like, how, when), from Proto-Iranian *či-gauna- (shape, figure), from *či- (what) +‎ *gauna- (color, type). Synchronically analyzable as چه (če, what) +‎ گون (gun, color, type).
