From Middle Persian mdyʾn' (mayān), from Old Persian *madyānaʰ, from Proto-Iranian *mádyānah, composed of *mádyah +‎ *-anah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mádʰyas, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *médʰyos. Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬌𐬜𐬌𐬌𐬀 (maiδiia), Sanskrit मध्य (madhya), Ossetian мидӕг (midæg), Gilaki مئن (men) and Arabic مَيْدَان (maydān).
