Inherited from Old Anatolian Turkish طَانِیمَقْ (ṭanımaq, danımaq, to known), from Proto-Turkic *tanu- (to know). Cognate with Azerbaijani tanımaq, Bashkir таныу (tanıw), Kazakh тану (tanu), Kumyk танымакъ (tanımaq), Kyrgyz тануу (tanuu), Southern Altai таныыр (tanïïr), Turkmen tanymak and Uzbek tanimoq.
