Etymology

Proto-Turkic *tạnu- (to know, get to know).[1]

Cognate with Kazakh тану (tanu), Kumyk танымакъ (tanımaq), Kyrgyz таануу (taanuu), Southern Altai таныыр (tanïïr), Uzbek tanimoq, Khakas таны- (tanı-), Tuvan таны- (tanı-), Turkish tanımak (know somebody, recognize).

  1. to recognize, know by sight, (be able to) identify
    Хаттың тышында адресын күреү менән атайымдың ҡулын таныным.
    Xattıñ tışında adresın kürew menən atayımdıñ qulın tanınım.
    As soon as I saw the address on the envelope, I recognized my father's handwriting.
    Әгәр ҙә мин яҙған кеше үҙен таныһа, оялыр тип уйлайым.
    Əgər źə min yaźğan keşe üźen tanıha, oyalır tip uylayım.
    If the person I wrote (about) recognizes himself/herself, I think s/he will be ashamed.
  2. (a system of writing) know letters, be able to read
  3. acknowledge, reckon with, take into account
  4. (philosophy) cognize; find out, learn, get to know
