Inherited from Old Anatolian Turkish طَانُقْ (ṭanuq, danuq), from Proto-Turkic *tanu-k (witness), a development of the root *tanu- (to get to know), whence also طانیمق (tanımak, to know, to recognize). Cognate with Azerbaijani tanıq and Hungarian tanú.
