حزر

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Arabic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Augmented from حَزَى (ḥazā), حَزَا (ḥazā, to compute by conjecture (fruits on a palm etc.)), a variant of ح ص ي (ḥ-ṣ-y), ح ص و (ḥ-ṣ-w), ultimately derivatives of حَصًى (ḥaṣan, pebbles) which can be traced to Proto-Semitic. Both roots are ascribed plant names: That حَزَاء (ḥazāʔ, rue), this حَزْرَة (ḥazra, bitter or salty tree or fruit), a meaning shared with مَقْر (maqr), خَمْط (ḵamṭ), صَبْر (ṣabr), perhaps reminiscing the bland tastes of pebbles.
