From earlier اتمك (etmek), from Proto-Common Turkic *etmek. Cognate with Azerbaijani əkmək, Bashkir икмәк (ikmək), Karachay-Balkar ётмек (ötmek), Kazakh өтпек (ötpek), Khakas іпек (ìpek), Kumyk экмек (ekmek) and Tatar икмәк (ikmäk).
