Etymology

[edit]

Ultimately a derivative of Proto-Iranian *gauz- (to hide, conceal), compare Sanskrit गूहति (gūhati). Possibly influenced by Northeastern Iranian, compare Sogdian [script needed] (ʾʾγʾwδ /āγōδ/, cover, shelter, barn). [1][2]
