[edit]Inherited from Proto-Turkic *āɣïl (“pen, fold”); cognate with Azerbaijani ağıl, Bashkir ауыл (awıl), Chuvash ял (jal), Kazakh ауыл (auyl), Kyrgyz айыл (ayıl), Turkmen āgyl and Tuvan аал (aal).

[edit]Ultimately a derivative of Proto-Iranian *gauz- (“to hide, conceal”), compare Sanskrit गूहति (gūhati). Possibly influenced by Northeastern Iranian, compare Sogdian [script needed] (ʾʾγʾwδ /āγōδ/, “cover, shelter, barn”). [1][2]
Alternatively, borrowed from a Turkic source: cognate with Ottoman Turkish آغل above[3]
