Persian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Iranian *ā- + *saima- (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *skeh₂i-), perhaps borrowed from a prefixed form of Sogdian 𐼼𐼷𐼺 (sym /sēm/, “confused, trouble”) with final denasalization; cf. Classical Persian آسیمه (āsēma, “confused”).[1] Compare Ancient Greek σκαιός (skaiós, “left-hand, clumsy, unlucky”), Latin scaevus (“left-hand, clumsy, unlucky”), Proto-Germanic *skaibaz (“slant, not straight”).
First attested in Unsuri, early eleventh century.
