Etymology

Uncertain. Usually treated as a cognate of Ancient Greek ἔρχομαι (érkhomai) or Sanskrit ऋच्छति (ṛccháti), but there are formal problems.

The verb is suppletive: part of the conjugation is filled by the root չոգ- (čʻog-), which is an alternative form of չու (čʻu).
