[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]- (Ulaanbaatar) IPA(key): /ix/, [ix]
Etymology 1
[edit]- From Proto-Mongolic *eke, compare Buryat эхэ (exe), Kalmyk эк (ek).
- Perhaps related to Proto-Turkic *eke (“older sister, aunt”), and so a possible Doublet of эгч (egč, “older sister”). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
Noun
[edit]эх • (ex) (Mongolian spelling ᠡᠬᠡ (eke), definite plural эхчүүд); (regular declension)
- mother
- Synonym: ээж (eež)
- motherland
Etymology 2
[edit]From Proto-Mongolic *hekin (“brain, head, beginning”), compare Daur xeky (“head”).
Compare perhaps more distantly Manchu ᡶᡝᡥᡳ (fehi, “brain”). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
Noun
[edit]эх • (ex) (Mongolian spelling ᠡᠬᠢ (eki)); (hidden-n declension)
