Inherited from Old East Slavic червьнъ (červĭnŭ, June). Cognates include Belarusian чэрвень (červjenʹ, June), Czech červen, Polish czerwiec, and Bulgarian червен (červen, July). Ultimately, from Proto-Slavic *čьrvenъ, which is a passive participle of *čьrviti (to dye red), from *čьrvь (worm, larva), referring to certain insect larvae being used to manufacture red dye at this time of year. Related to черво́нный (červónnyj) and червь (červʹ).
