From Proto-Slavic *berzьnь (March; April), from *berza (birch) + *-ьnъ. Related to бере́за (beréza), referring to birch trees which bloom at this time of year. Cognates include Polish brzezień (March), Czech březen, Russian березозол (berezozol), and Bulgarian брезен (brezen, April).
