Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *sъ(n)-, from *sъ(n), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱom. The /n/ persists in сънѧти (sŭnęti), from ѧти (ęti, “to take”). Compare the analogous loss of -n- in въ- (vŭ-).

Not to be confused with Proto-Slavic *sъ- (“good”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁su-.

Prefix

съ- • (sŭ-)

1. Prepended to verbs, usually forming a perfective from an imperfective verb.

   ‎съ- (sŭ-) + ‎поустити (pustiti) → ‎съпоустити (sŭpustiti)

   ‎съ- (sŭ-) + ‎знати (znati) → ‎съзнати (sŭznati)

   ‎съ- (sŭ-) + ‎ломити (lomiti) → ‎съломити (sŭlomiti)

   ‎съ- (sŭ-) + ‎коупити (kupiti) → ‎съкоупити (sŭkupiti)

2. (used with verbs) (describing an action moving from a single position or many positions into another single position)

   ‎съ- (sŭ-) + ‎лити impf (liti, “to pour”) → ‎сълити pf (sŭliti, “to pour into one place”)

3. (used with verbs) down (describing a downward action)

   ‎съ- (sŭ-) + ‎ходити (xoditi, “to go”) → ‎съходити (sŭxoditi, “to go down”)

4. (used with verbs) off, from off (describing an action of removing oneself to another location)
