Inherited from Old Ruthenian владати (vladati), which simultaneously derives from both Old Church Slavonic владати (vladati) and Old Polish władać. Alternatively, a later borrowing from Church Slavonic directly into Ukrainian. Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *voldati. Doublet of воло́дати (volódaty).
