From Byzantine Greek, from Koine Greek, from Ancient Greek σκᾰ́πτω (skáptō) from the perfective stem σκαψ- in the pattern of -ψ- > -β- as in κλέπτω (klépto), κλεψ- > κλέβω (klévo, steal).[1]
