[edit]From Byzantine Greek κουνούπιον (kounoúpion), from Koine Greek κωνώπιον (kōnṓpion), from Ancient Greek κώνωψ (kṓnōps, “mosquito”), possibly ultimately from Egyptian ḫnws (“a kind of stinging insect”).[1]
