[edit]Initial meaning ‘maid, stepdaughter’, feminine of Byzantine Greek κόπελος (kópelos, “servant, stepson”), from South Proto-Slavic *kopylъ ‘shoot, sprout; bastard’ (compare Serbo-Croatian kȍpile, Bulgarian ко́пеле (kópele); cf. also Albanian kopil (“bastard”), Romanian copilă (“child, girl”)).
