Inherited from Byzantine Greek ἡγουμένη (hēgouménē), feminine noun, as in masculine Koine noun ἡγούμενος (hēgoúmenos), from Ancient Greek present participle of ἡγέομαι / ἡγοῦμαι (hēgoûmai, “I go before, I lead”).
