[edit]Learnedly from Ancient Greek ἡγοῦμαι (hēgoûmai), contracted form of ἡγέομαι (hēgéomai).

Usage notes
[edit]- This verb can only be construed with an indirect object, either introduced by the preposition σε (se) or, continuing ancient usage, with a morphological genitive:[1]
- Ο Στέφανος ηγείται στην προσπάθεια για την ανανέωση του κόμματος. (periphrastic construction)
- O Stéfanos igeítai stin prospátheia gia tin ananéosi tou kómmatos.
- Stefanos is leading the effort to renew the party.
- Ο Στέφανος ηγείται της προσπάθειας για την ανανέωση του κόμματος. (with genitive object)
- O Stéfanos igeítai tis prospátheias gia tin ananéosi tou kómmatos.
- Stefanos is leading the effort to renew the party.
