Etymology
[edit]Unknown. It has been compared with Old Norse kýll (“bag for victuals”) and Old High German kiulla (“bag”). Maybe related to γύαλον (gúalon, “hollow of a cuirass”). According to Pokorny, from Proto-Indo-European *gew- (“to bend, bow, arch, vault, curve”).[1]
