Ancient Greek
[edit]Letter
[edit]Ι • (I) (uppercase, lowercase ι)
- The upper case letter iota, a letter resp. the ninth letter of the Greek alphabet.
Symbol
[edit]Ι • (I)
- A digit 1 in the decimal acrophonic numeral system that predated the gematria system. A tally mark equivalent to the Roman digit I.
- (money) A tally for obols.
Usage notes
[edit]The basic acrophonic units are Ι 1, 𐅃 5, Δ 10, Η 100, Χ 1000 and Μ 10,000. Ι is iterated for ΙΙ 2, ΙΙΙ 3 and ΙΙΙΙ 4, and are added to 𐅃 5 for 𐅃Ι 6, 𐅃ΙΙ 7, 𐅃ΙΙΙ 8 and 𐅃ΙΙΙΙ 9.
Unlike higher digits, Ι is not joined to Τ and Σ for quantities of talents and staters. Rather, the letters Τ and Σ are used as tally units, as in ΤΤΤ (3 talents) and Τ𐅐𐅏ΣΣΣ (1 talent 18 staters). An exception is made for drachmas, where the special symbol 𐅂 is used, e.g. 𐅂𐅂𐅂𐅂 (4 drachmas). In this system, Ι is used for obols, as in 𐅂𐅂𐅂ΙΙΙ (3 drachmas 3 obols, or 3½ drachmas), 𐅄Δ𐅃𐅂ΙΙΙΙ (66 drachmas 4 obols).
