Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from French Dakao, itself from Đất Hộ (literally quarter land), the old name of the area.

Since /h/ is not a phoneme in French, it was omitted. The /k/ in Dakao is from the /k/ in đất (land, soil), reflecting the local Southern pronunciation.
