[edit]From Proto-Norse ᚦᚨᛁᛉᛟ (þaiʀo /þaizō/), from Proto-Germanic *þaizǭ, genitive plural of *sa (“that”). Cognate with Old English þāra, Old Saxon thero, Gothic 𐌸𐌹𐌶𐌴 (þizē).
