Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *öökkidäk. Compare Votic öötšütellä (hiccup, burp) (Mati), Finnish yökätä, Livvi yökkiä. Cognates might also include Eastern Mari ӱгынчаш (ügynčaš, hiccup), Udmurt вукпотыны (vukpotyny, nauseate, make someone puke), Komi-Zyrian вӧк (vök, disgust, nastiness, noun) and Hungarian öklendezik (barf, burp).

Possibly onomatopoeic.
